League of Legends: Betting in the Rift
A multiplayer online battle arena, League of Legends sees two teams battling it out to destroy their opponents Nexus – or headquarters – in various game modes. The teams are either randomly selected or premade, depending on the game mode and level of play. Developed by Riot Games, League of Legends boasts the largest following of all eSports: with an astonishing 7.5 million players active at any one time, 27 million players online per day, and 67 million players monthly.
An Introduction to League of Legends
Officially launched in Europe and North America in 2009, League of Legends has grown from strength to strength. Originally featuring 40 playable champions, the game now boasts over 100, with more added constantly – along with the fact that it is completely free to play, this is one of the reasons that it is so popular.
At the highest level of play, where the professionals battle it out for millions of dollars in prize funds, the game can become a complex and mechanically intensive beast. Fortunately, at its core, League of Legends is quite simple to understand.
Two teams of players, each aided by computer generated creeps, face off against each other from opposite sides of a symmetrical map. The two team’s bases are connected by lanes, which are surrounded by a jungle containing large non-playable monsters such as Dragons – the killing of which provides the teams with benefits. As the players try to advance further up their opponent’s lanes, they meet resistance in the form of turrets and the aforementioned creeps.
By destroying the turrets, creeps, jungle monsters, and opposing players the teams will gain experience and gold. With these, they can purchase items or unlock/empower their character’s skills.
The game ends when one team destroys the opponent’s Nexus, or the game is so one-sided that one team forfeits the game.
Betting on League of Legends
eSports betting is still in its infancy, but it is growing at a breakneck speed. However, the popularity of League of Legends has seen a lot of bookmakers offer markets on it. These include bet365, William Hill, Pinnacle, and Betway. At the moment, you’ll often be limited to betting on match win/lose markets or overall competition results.
Mark our words: that will change!
With the sheer number of variables that go into every single game played – and some professional tournaments hosting “best of” series – the possibilities for markets is near endless. Gold advantage by game time, player kills and deaths, most assists, and pentakill markets are all something that you’ll be seeing in the future.
eSports betting is fast-paced and entertaining as hell, so remember to keep up to date with everything that’s happening, right here at eSport Online Betting!
