Heroes of the Storm: Betting on Heroes

A newcomer to the world of eSports, Heroes of the Storm is Blizzard’s latest addition to their impressive roster of games – which already includes massive titles such the Starcraft and Warcraft series. Heroes is their first foray into the MOBA scene although they have proclaimed that it is, in fact, not a MOBA at all: the game was released in June 2015 and Blizzard have made a point of calling it a “hero brawler” rather than a multiplayer online battle arena.

Try as we might, to differentiate a “hero brawler” from a “MOBA”, we can’t. They’re top-down, multiplayer games that see teams of players battle it out for victory.

An Introduction to Heroes of the Storm

Counter StrikeThe maps, or battlegrounds, each has a central map objective which is one of the main factors in victory—or defeat! As soon as this feature spawns, you can be sure that there’ll be a mass of players rushing to the area: after all, everybody wants to win!

Players can use characters from a variety of Blizzard titles, levelling up, gaining gold and items and contesting objectives across the map to fulfill their ultimate goal: destroying the enemy team’s core. All playable characters begin the game with three abilities and a trait. As teams level up, new abilities become available through talents, allowing characters to be customized to the player’s needs.

As of December 2015, there are 45 characters available for players to pick from and that number is constantly growing—new characters are being released on an almost monthly basis. These characters belong to one of four roles, with each role having similar traits, despite abilities causing the characters within them to vary quite massively.

Inside the battlegrounds of Heroes of the Storm, you will find three lanes that are home to multiple towns and defensive fortifications. Central to each battleground is a map objective which will greatly assist the team which captures it—making it a massive priority—which is why many games involve early and crucial team fights over it.

While Heroes of the Storm is still in its infancy, there’s little doubt that a company of Blizzard’s renown within the competitive gaming environment will be able to push it into contention for some of the biggest and best tournaments and leagues. It has been out for less than a year at the time of writing, and it has already features within some serious leagues and even made an appearance at Blizzcon 2015.
