Defense of the Ancients 2: Betting on Thrones
The original Defense of the Ancients, which stemmed from a user-made Warcraft 3 map, is often considered the father of all multiplayer online battle arena games (MOBAs).
Defense of the Ancients 2 is the sequel that has launched itself into the stratosphere in terms of success, topping Steam’s most actively played games list – beating Counter-Strike: Global Offensive by quite a healthy margin on a daily basis. Due in no small part, we’d imagine, due to the fact that Defense of the Ancients 2 is completely free to download and play.
From humble beginnings as a player-made mod of an existing title, to a standalone game with one million players daily, Defense of the Ancients has become a force to be reckoned with in the eSports world.
An Introduction to Defense of the Ancients 2
DotA2, as the game is affectionately known, is a multiplayer online battle arena which pits two teams of five against each other, with each team’s ultimate goal being the destruction of the enemy’s throne.
The teams face off on a symmetrical map, with the thrones opposite each other, connected by three lanes. Surrounded by jungle, the lanes are home to six defensive towers – three per team – which attack enemy players and creeps. Halfway across the map lies a river, diagonally intersecting the central area. Because of this, each team has one ‘safe’ lane and one ‘suicide’ lane – named aptly as their lengths dictate the safety of players within the said lane (the longer the lane, the further from the safety of their own base a player is). Within the two opposing bases are four structures, two per team. Known as barracks, they spawn creeps for their team, which in turn push down the lanes towards the enemy base.
All player-controlled characters begin the game at level one and gain experience and gold as they perform certain actions, such as destroying an enemy structure or killing an enemy player. Experience grants the players with levels and power, whilst gold allows the purchase of powerful items. The acquisition of gold and experience throughout the duration means that one team or the other will inevitably begin to “snowball” as their advantages begin to overwhelm their opponents.
The game is over when one team destroys the other’s throne, or one team gives up hope and forfeits the match.
